Velma Rachel (Marcotte) Martin, Marion, KS, was born April 10, 1921 in Vermillion, South Dakota to Albert and Eva (Hubert) Marcotte, and was raised in Kansas. She married Harry W. Martin, April 25th, 1942 in Emporia, KS. She was a longtime resident of Pilsen, KS. Velma passed Friday, April 7, 2017 at St. Luke Nursing Home in Marion, KS.
Velma was a homemaker, raising her 10 kids to know how to work in their very large gardens. She loved to cook and can. Velma was always a hard worker, raising many chicken’s and always having time to cuddle a child or a baby chick. She loved the Lord with all her heart, mind, soul and strength. She was very active in the church till the very end.
It you were to stop by you might end up in a serious game of cards with her and you would frequently end up on the losing side. Some of her favorite reading materials were her bible and the spring gardening catalogs.
Velma is preceded in death by her husband Harry in 1999, 2 sisters Agatha Marcotte and Dora Bremenkamp; 3 brothers Gabriel Marcotte, Virgil Marcotte and Louis Marcotte; grandson Frank Horinek and great grandson Stephen Karhoff.
Velma is survived by sister Jeannette Rowland, 10 Children; Colleen Key of Morris AL, Phillip Martin of Onaga KS, Cheryl Bryant of Conyers, GA, Gloria Karhoff of Milton, IA, John Martin of Topeka, KS, Marilyn Horinek of Atwood, KS, Barbara Roberta of Birmingham, AL, Virginia Smith of Louisville, KY, Albert Martin of Topeka, KS, and Norma Horinek of Pilsen, KS. She is also survived by 50 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral mass service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen, KS, with a rosary being held prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home in Marion on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 1-8 p.m.
