Steve’s life began on July 4, 1948, in Herington, Kansas. He was the oldest of five children born to Dewuain and Bonna Jean (Pretzer) Sams. Steve was raised in White City. He graduated from White City High School in 1966. Immediately following graduation, he served his country in the United States Army. Steve saw service in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968 before being honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Diane on December 5, 1992, in Abilene. Steve spent most of his working career with several different railroads and had a few odd jobs in between. He retired from the K and O Railroad in 2013. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Diane Sams of Marion, children Erica (Mark) Folcik of Gulf Breeze, FL, Tyler (Courtney) Sams of Boise, ID, Cody ( Libby) Nelson of Lincolnville, Cory ( Emma) Nelson of Marion, and Casey ( Javyn) Nelson of Council Grove; grandchildren Saylor Sparks of Liverpool, NY, Kenzie Sams of Boise, ID, Caylen Nelson of Council Grove, Tripp Nelson of Lincolnville, Rope Uhl of Lincolnville, Tandus Miles and Graham Tajchman of Marion; siblings Linda (Eric) McKenzie of Parkerville, Tina Radle of Durand, WI, sister in law Kay Sams of White City, brother in law James Webb of Abilene and many nieces and nephew. Steve passed away Wednesday September 11, 2024, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita after a long battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Leah Webb and brother Russell Sams. Steve’s family will gather with friends on Friday September 20, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. at Yazel Megli Funeral Home, Marion. His funeral service will be held on Saturday September 21, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Marion Christian Church led by Pastor Carl Helm. He will be laid to rest in Marion Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions in Steve’s name may be directed to the Marion Christian Church.
