Melvin "Buck" Sherman O'Dell

Buck’s life began on October 25, 1949, at Fort Ticonderoga, New York. He was the son of Gordon Percy O’Dell and Jean Mae (Supry) O’Dell.

 Buck enlisted in the United States Army in 1967 after permission from his dad at the age of 17. He spent the next twenty years serving his country and retired as a Sergent First Class. While in the Army, Buck met his future bride, Irmy Patt and they were united in marriage on December 14, 1977, in Hanau, Germany. After his release from the Army, Buck worked as a bus driver and custodian for the Herington Schools and eventually became a coast-to-coast truck driver for the next 20 years, coming off the road in 2010. He enjoyed playing Facebook games on the computer and fishing

. His greatest joy was his family which includes his wife Irmy of Herington; children James (Amanda) McIntyre of Independence, MO, and Sandra (Dale) Pierce of Herington; grandchildren Austin (Fabiola) Pierce, Patrick McIntyre, Dallas (Travis) Burton, Ethan McIntyre, Jameson McIntyre, and Trevor (Hannah Oswald) Williams; great granddaughter Scarlett, Aubrey and Aurora; great grandson Ricardo; and several siblings, nieces and nephews

. Buck passed away at his home on Sunday July 14, 2024, in Herington. He is preceded in death by his parents, son Mark O’Dell and great grandson Beckett. 

His family will gather with friends on Friday July 26, 2024, at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery, near Manhattan for his graveside military service at 11 am. Yazel Megli Funeral Home, Herington is serving the family. Memorial contributions in Buck’s name may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Dickinson County Home Health, and Hospice.
