Lucy M. Janzen, 93, died December 19, 2024 at Presbyterian Manor, Newton, KS. She was born September 25, 1931, three-and-one-half miles west of Marion, KS, to her parents Stephen W. and Ida M. (Olsen) Sandwell. Lucy was the third of 10 children.
She went to Canada Grade School and graduated in 1949 from Marion High School, Marion, KS. On October 7, 1949, she married Earl C. Janzen at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Marion, KS. He died February 21, 2015. Earl and Lucy were married over 65 years. Together they raised three children, Steve, Marilyn, and Karen.
Lucy was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton. She is survived by daughters Marilyn Cook, Newton, and Karen Ewy, Wichita; daughter-in-law Phoebe Janzen, Marion; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters Evelyn Sandwell and Cora Rogers; brother Kenneth (Margie) Sandwell; sister-in-law Janice (Ray) Rees; brother-in-law Bob Roblin; and friend, Don Croft.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Earl Janzen; son Steve Janzen; grandson Randall Cook; sisters Dorothy Bradfield, Norma Jean Tussey, Mary Roblin and Edith Sandwell; brothers James and John Sandwell; and sons-in-law Ray Cook and Arlen Ewy.
Lucy worked at Southwestern Bell telephone office, Duckwall’s and Kaw Theater in Marion before she and Earl were married. They moved their young family to Peabody in 1959, where Earl became the lessee of Earl’s Conoco Station. She was the bookkeeper at the station. Over the years she sewed formals, wedding dresses, made decorated Christmas felt stockings, and 32 dolls. She became Peabody City Treasurer in 1976 for 18 years, helped with funeral dinners in Peabody Christian Church and helped with dinners at the Peabody Senior Center. Each fall, she helped the center make peppernuts to sell.
A celebration of Lucy’s life will be on Saturday December 28, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Valley United Methodist Church with a visitation from 10-11 a.m. Friends are encouraged to share their memories of Lucy during the service. She will be laid to rest in Marion Cemetery.
