LaVerna "Vernie" Beaston

MARION - LaVerna Mae "Vernie" Beaston, age 87, passed away Monday. June 6, 2016 at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.

She was born in McPherson, Kansas on June 20, 1928 to LL and Martha Grunewald Knight. She moved to Marion at the age of one year old and attended Marion High School and Emporia State University.  

She married Jack Beaston  on October 1, 1950 in Marion; Jack proceeded her in death on December 17, 2008.

Vernie worked at the Marion National Bank and Hannahford Abstract before purchasing Beaston Market with her husband Jack. She helped with every aspect of the business and enjoyed her many faithful customers through the years.  They were once featured on Hatteberg's People.  Aside from running a business, Vernie loved playing bridge, singing, and above all, her family.  She was also a faithful member of Valley United Methodist Church.

In 2013, she moved to Manhattan, to be closer to her daughter and family. There she had an extended family at Via Christi Village where she brought joy to everyone she met. She was known to everyone for her singing, compliments, and expressions of love. 

She will be missed by many including her daughter Marty Heigert and husband Chuck of Alma, Kansas; her son Brooke Beaston of Jackson,Tennessee; her grandchildren Meggan Messersmith and husband Jordan of Lexington, Nebraska; Abby Heigert of Alma, Kansas; and Sami Leisinger and husband Ethan of Chattanooga, Tennessee; her sister Jean Pierce of Marion, Kansas; niece Jill Miller and husband Ron of Grapevine, Texas; and nephew Mark Kiline of Ukiah, California. 

Services are Friday, June 10, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at Valley Methodist Church in Marion, Kansas. A private family inurnment will be held in the Marion Cemetery.  Memorial Funds have been established for Valley United Methodist Church or to Good Shepherd Hospice House (Manhattan) in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, 205 Elm, Marion, KS, 66861.
