Katherine "Kathy" Lou Boccia

Kathy was born on May 28, 1955, to Wayne and Dorothy (Reis) Johnson in Joplin, Missouri. She graduated from Columbus Unified High School in Columbus, Kansas in 1973. She married John Michael Boccia on November 8, 1974 at the First Baptist Church in Carl Junction, Missouri.

She was a stay-at-home mom until her children were all in school. Afterwards she worked as a paraprofessional at Potwin Elementary School for several years. Most recently, she worked as the secretary for the Potwin Christian Church up until her passing. On Sunday mornings, she was up front with the worship team to lead praise music.

Kathy loved her family – especially being a mom and “Mamow.” She was generous with her time and warmly welcomed people into her home; many can attest to her delicious cooking. She enjoyed Kansas State football and George Strait music.

Her loving family includes her children, Michael (Erin) Boccia of Wichita, Gina Boccia of Elbing, Nathan (Sharla) Boccia of Andover; grandchildren, Evelyn, Timothy, Julia and Nicolas Boccia, Olivia and Breck Wisdom, Sophia, Talia, and Gemma Boccia; siblings, Gary (Deonne) Johnson of Hutchinson, Lana (Jeff) Royster of Galena, Kansas and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, who passed away within 3 weeks of one another just one year ago, her husband, John, who passed on December 23, 2021, and an infant brother, Troy Johnson. Kathy passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at the age of 66 years old.

Her funeral service will be held with husband, John’s, on Saturday, January 8, at 11:00 a.m. at Potwin Christian Church, 123 Violet, Potwin, Kansas. Interment will follow at Green Valley Cemetery, Furley, KS.

Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to Potwin Christian Church in care of Lamb Funeral Home, P.O. Box 358, Whitewater, KS 67154. Please sign her online guest book and leave a memory of Kathy at

My heart is sad at the loss of my friend and classmate. The Girls of the Class of 73 enjoy getting together periodically & loved it when Kathy got to come. She & John are enjoying their rewards in heaven & I know I will see them again someday soon. My thoughts & prayers are with all of you.

My deepest heart felt sympathy and love to you at this time for the loss of John and Kathy. I did not know John but have known Kathy for many years. When I substitute taught years ago at Potwin elementary Kathy was the para in the class room. I was very impressed with her teaching ability. She was a lovely person and both will be greatly missed by all.
