Judy Berg

Judith (Judy) Ann (Hendrickson) Berg was born on January 24, 1941 in Ransom, Kansas to Earl Jennings and Fern Valda (Hamit) Hendrickson. She was the oldest of six children, Elizabeth, Earlene Valda Williams, Shirley Mae Peterson, James (Jim) Peter and Earl Jay Hendrickson. They grew up on a farm south of WaKeeney in Trego County where they raised crops and cattle.

Judy married Glenn Arthur Berg on October 20, 1957 and moved to Wichita and eventually Furley, Kansas where she resided for over 50 years. Her greatest love was her family which included her husband and five children and four daughters-in law, Donald (Linda) Berg of Whitewater, Ronald (Linda Aiken) Berg of Wichita, Dr. Gina Berg of Wichita, Richard (Jennifer) Berg of Gardner, and Dr. Carl (Stephanie) Berg of Sisters, Oregon; as well as twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Judy loved family reunions and often celebrated them with DQ Dilly Bars! There she enjoyed her extended family of 4 siblings, 7 sisters-in law, 5 brothers-in-law, 26 nieces and nephews, additional great-nieces/nephews. Judy was a special part of very close loving sisters-in-law.

Judy was a beloved member of the Furley community who had a special affection for babies, people with special needs and older adults. She cared for many children in her home (over 100 to her count). She provided care for residents at Wheat State Manor and also provided private duty in-home end-of-life care for neighbors, friends and family. She worked at Furley Café and for her daughter at Miss Bojangles. Judy was a member of the Furley United Methodist Church where she was in the Women’s Circle, chaired the Fellowship Committee and often served in the kitchen and others with card-writing. She served on the board of the EHU and was also a leader in the Furley 4-H Club. She was a member of the American Legion and Wheat State Manor Auxiliaries. She read to children at school and often brought animals for show-and-tell. She was famously known in the community for her popcorn balls on Halloween!

Besides her family, Judy also loved her geese, cats and gardens, owls (her family nickname was “Hoot”), pink roses, card games, Sequence and Elvis! She had a compassionate heart, infectious giggle, and clever wit. She was often described as gentle and kind and also as the funny one in her long-time Furley Friends card party group. A life well-loved is a life well-lived.

Judy passed away on July 17, 2024, at age 83 in her daughter’s home in Wichita, KS. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters Elizabeth, Earlene and Shirley. She is survived by her brothers Jim and Jay (WaKeeney) and her children and all grandchildren.

Her family will gather with friends on Wednesday from 5:00-7:00pm at Lamb (Yazel-Megli) Funeral Home in Whitewater, KS. Her funeral service will be held on Friday at 10:00am at the Furley United Methodist Church, Furley, KS. She will be laid to rest in WaKeeney City Cemetery, WaKeeney, Kansas. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to Furley United Methodist Church.
