HERINGTON - John Neal True, 97, former resident of Herington, died Saturday, August 6th, 2016, at the Rolling Hill Health Facility, Topeka. He was born on October 19, 1918, at Carnegie, OK, the son of James G. and Edna F. (Robohn) True. John was the last of 10 children (7 brothers & 2 sisters).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, August 27th, 2016, at the Penwell-Gabel’s Midtown Chapel in Topeka; on the day John & Velma’s would be their 76th year of their wedding. John will be laid to rest on Friday, August 26, 2016, at 2:00PM, in the Penwell-Gabel’s Serenity Garden, Topeka, with Military Honors.
Mr. True was a Telephone Technician for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 40 years, retired in 1981. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Herington; and the Herington Kiwanis Club, served many years as secretary. He was a Beekeeper from 1975 to 2006. He loved music, traveling, and gardening. He graduated from Osage City High School with the class of 1937.
Served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Action, the Ryukyus Campaign, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a Technician Fourth Grade with the 105th Infantry Division.
Married Velma L. Chatham on August 2, 1940, in the Chapel of Christ Cathedral, Topeka; she preceded in death on January 20, 2014.
Survived by a son Philip True (wife-Lynn) of Johnstown, CO; five (5) daughters: Barbara Weber (husband-Mike) of Bennington, VT, Jennifer True of Glendora, CA, Donna Hulbert (husband-Frank) of Denver, CO, Rebecca Otte (husband-Ken) of Topeka, & Melba Moffitt (husband-John) of Tulsa, OK; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
