J.P.’s life began on March 5, 1951, in Hillsboro. He was the son of James William “Bill” Phillips and Martha Ann (Loewen) Phillips. J.P. was raised in Cedar Creek on the family farm and loved hunting and fishing there. John attended Cedar Point Grade School and Chase County Community High School where he played baseball as the catcher, basketball and was the football quarterback. John graduated in 1969. He attended Kansas State University on a baseball scholarship and later received an injury that ended his playing career. He farmed and ranched on Cedar Creek and near Peabody in Marion County. J.P. also worked as a welder. In2001, he had a life-threatening heart attack but always kept his spirit of positivity and wanting to help those around him. J. P. is survived by his sister Karole Lindgren; nephews Rocky and Ryon Lindgren and was preceded in death by his parents, and niece Kena Lindgren. J.P. passed away at his Hillsboro home on November 18, 2023. His memorial service will be held on Thursday January 18, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Yazel Megli Funeral Home in Marion.
