John James (Jim) Wyatt, 89, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025. He was born in
Topeka, Kansas, June 5, 1935, and was preceded in death by his parents, Estel and Elsie
(Shetron) Wyatt and an older infant brother. He grew up on a farm near Silver Lake in Shawnee
County and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1953. He then attended and graduated
from Washburn University in Topeka in 1958. In the fall of 1959, he accepted a social
science/physical education teaching position at Centre High School at Lost Springs, Kansas, and
later served as guidance counselor. He remained in that school district teaching, counseling,
and coaching, until he retired in May 1990. During those years he also had a small farming
operation at Lost Springs.In 1964 he received his master’s degree from the University of Kansas with a major in
guidance and counseling. He was accepted into and attended a government-sponsored summer
guidance and counseling institute at Oklahoma State University in 1966 and a similar history
institute at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri in 1968. In 1960 he and Elaine Bevan of Lost Springs were married and then divorced in 1990.
Survivors are sons, Greg (Cindy) Wyatt of Marion, Kansas, Stan (Patty) Wyatt of Fruita,
Colorado, and Kirk (Jennifer) Wyatt of Gypsum, Kansas: three grandsons, Jordan, James, and JJ:
two granddaughters, Grace and Abby: five step-grandsons, Tyler, Nick, Zach, Quentin, and
Philip: four step-granddaughters, Relene, Ashley, Courtney, and Katherine. In addition, he has
five great-grandchildren with a sixth on the way and three step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 8th , 2025 at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at
10:00 AM at Centre High School, Lost Springs, Kansas. Burial services will follow at the
Highland Cemetery in Marion.
Memorials in lieu of flowers can be made to Centre USD 397 Schools
