James David Lane was born on June 22, 1948, in St. Louis, Oklahoma. He is the son of Jackie and Georgia (Wood) Lane. James graduated from Shawnee High School, Shawnee, Oklahoma, with the Class of 1966. James then joined the United States Air Force and served his country as a Military Policeman. While in the US Air Force, James achieved the rank of Sergeant, and was stationed at various locations including Lackland AFB, Texas, Travis AFB, California, Tuy Hoa AFB, Vietnam, NhaTrang AFB, Vietnam, Hahn AFB, Germany, and Barksdale AFB, Louisiana. After his military service, James graduated with his associate degree from Independence Kansas Community College and then went on to graduate with his Bachelor of Science from Wichita State University in 1975. James then went to work as an Investigator for the Sedgwick County District Attorney from 1975 to 1982. During this time, James married his loving wife, Janis “Jan” Findley on June 18, 1977, at the First Presbyterian Church, Coffeyville, Kansas. Following his marriage, in 1978 and 1979 James went to Interim Study University of London, England and graduated with his Master’s Degree in Administration of Justice from Wichita State University. James was also a 1979 graduate of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. Following his education, James worked for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation as a Senior Special Agent from 1982 to 2013 and worked on the DEA Task Force in Wichita, Kansas with Clandestine Labs from 1987 to 1997. James played an important role with the first Methamphetamine Lab take down in Kansas.

James was a strong member of the community and was involved in numerous organizations including the American Legion Post 65, Whitewater, Kansas, Wichita Scottish Rites Consistory, 32nd Degree, Kansas Police Officers Association, and Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Local Chapter, Wichita, Kansas. James was also a part of the Boy Scouts of America where he was Scoutmaster for Troop 225. James was a recipient of the Quivira BSA Silver Beaver Award and the Order of the Arrow Virgil Honor. He attended the BSA Wood Badge, BSA Philmont BSA Ranch, BSA Boundary Waters Canoe Camp, BSA Quivira Ranch. James also attended the BSA National Jamboree as the Range Instructor and was a member of the Furley United Methodist Church, Furley, Kansas.

His greatest joy is his family which includes his wife: Jan, Valley Center, KS; children: Jared (Kristin) Lane, Furley, KS; Jason (Sherrie) Lane, Furley, KS; grandchildren: Alanna, Kaeden, Ella, Colt; sister: Jalaina Lane Hurst, Shawnee, OK; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents: Jackie and Georgia, and brother: Larry Joe Lane.

James, at the age of 74, passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at his home in Valley Center, Kansas. Funeral Service for James will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at Furley United Methodist Church, led by Pastor Garry Winget. Burial will follow at Green Valley Cemetery, Furley, Kansas. Lamb Funeral Home is serving the family. Memorial contributions in James’ name may be directed to Furley United Methodist Church, Phoenix Hospice, or Boy Scouts of America: Troop 225.
