MOM’s HANDS

Mom’s hands are still now

They are crooked, wrinkled and cold

But I see them in my mind

Doing a million different things.

I see their loving touch of her favorite cats and dogs

I see them kneading rye bread and whipping meringue to top a pie.

I see them tending delicate African violets

But also taking the hoe after a snake.

I see them chopping corn off the cob all day to fill the freezer for winter

And throwing fresh chicken on a grill during a busy day of butchering with a friend.

I see them endlessly stitching tea towels and little girl’s dresses.

I see them, sanding, staining and varnishing furniture

until it sparkled and was smooth as glass.

I see them painting bunnies and Santas for the grandchildren’s delight.

I see them setting her mom’s hair in pincurls and perm rods.

I see them endlessly filling the feeders with thistle, seeds and nectar

And I see them holding precious baby granddaughters and grandson.

I see them still now, but I remember the love and work they accomplished

And my mind will never forget.
