Florence, KS- Dewy Zane Stevens was born August 10, 1937, in Satanta, Kansas to Mable (Jones) and Dwight C. Stevens. He passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2019 with his family surrounding him.
He married Jane McCallum on September 27, 1958 in Enid, Oklahoma. To this union came three daughters; Karen (Don, Jr.) Willits, McPherson, Cindy (Mark) Slater, Florence and Melissa (Norman) Richardson, Florence; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Dewy had two older sisters, Esther (Walt) Sinclair and Dona Jane (Earl) Mann, Wichita, as well as brother’s-in-law Ron McCallum and Dennis (Cheryl) McCallum, Wichita and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Esther, brother’s in-law Walt, Earl, and Ron.
The family moved to Florence in 1941 and Dewy lived out his life there. Dewy always had a love of farming, he farmed in the Florence area all his adult life. He graduated from Florence High School in 1955. He worked at Boeing in Wichita for 30 years in 2 stints from 1955 to 1995. During his time away from Boeing he did several things along with his farming. He drove a school bus for the Florence schools and then drove for the Marion / Florence school district on a regular rural route, and drove the activity bus to many school functions. He also served on the Board of Education for both the Florence school and then the district. In the 1970’s and early 80’s, Dewy was a custom hay hauler in Marion and Chase counties. He was the owner/operator of the Quality Oil Station in Florence in the late 70’s.
He was an active member of the Florence United Methodist Church up until his illness kept him from it.
Dewy enjoyed boating, camping, and fishing as well as playing cards and hunting but mainly enjoyed the time with family and friends. His orneriness and sense of humor will be greatly missed.
